Each year, during the summer months, our powerboat, the Blue Whisper, is stationed in Bradwell Creek and is available to be booked to be taken out on certain weekends. A trip on Blue Whisper for individuals or families is always a great day out.
This project is run by Steve Sparrow who is a very keen sailor with over 50 years experience crewing and skippering dinghies and yachts in the Thames Estuary. As well as a powerboat drivers qualification Steve also has an RYA Yachtmaster skippers license and really enjoys making sure everybody has a safe and fun day out on the water.
While we're on the water everyone will be given the opportunity to drive the boat themselves under careful supervision and learn a little about navigation and the marine environment. Depending on the tides and the weather there's the chance to go to nearby places like Mersea and Osea islands and explore the Blackwater and Colne rivers and harbours and quite often we'll go further up the coast past Clacton and through Harwich Haven and into the Stour or Orwell rivers passing some of the container ships unloading cargo from all over the world on the way or visit Walton Backwaters - home of Arthur Ransome's classic book Secret Water - to see the seal colony and the dozens of bird species there.
Off the coast, there are abandoned lighthouses and WW2 gunnery forts and the Gunfleet wind farm which is part of one of the largest in the UK.
The boat's safety equipment includes a reserve engine, two marine VHF radios, a GPS navigation system and flares and is always crewed by two qualified drivers. We're usually out for most of the day and moor in a remote creek or perhaps visit a deserted beach for lunch. We provide lifejackets and waterproofs, all you have to do is wear warm clothing and a bring a packed lunch, drinks and sunscreen.
We do ask for a voluntary donation to help with the cost of fuel and maintenance and there's always the possibility of a lift to and back from Bradwell if you need one.
